Bleeding in the mouth is never normal. Bleeding around a single tooth may be an indication of dental trauma. In some cases, a blow to the mouth, even from falling or another accident can cause a tooth to become dislodged from its socket. It may be pushed sideways or out of its socket. In other cases, the tooth may be pushed further up into its socket. Any of these injuries may cause a tooth to bleed.

If you notice a tooth bleeding, it is important that you contact one of our dentists right away so that the tooth injury can be identified and treatment can begin. For permanent teeth that have become dislodged, root canal treatment should be started no more than a few days following the injury. Your dentist may also place a special medication such as calcium hydroxide inside the tooth as part of the treatment.

How long will treatment for an injured tooth take?

Treating an injured tooth will depend upon the type and severity of the injury, as well as how well your tooth was cared for following the incident. This is why it is so important to seek treatment for a tooth injury as soon as possible after it happens. If a dislodged tooth is not treated quickly, the body may begin to reject to tooth in response to the injury. This is known as root resorption. If this happens, your tooth may need to be extracted and replaced instead of simply being treated and left in place. Once your tooth is treated, you will need to have regular follow-up visits with your dentist to ensure that root resorption is not occurring, and to ensure that the injured tooth is healing properly.

It can be tempting to ignore a tooth that bleeds only a little after a tooth injury, or occasionally in other circumstances, but is imperative that you do not do so. Injured teeth can cause serious dental issues, and if left untreated may become infected or even fall out.
